BET Awards 2022: Latto’s Top ‘Big Energy’ Moments

What’s your favorite record from the Atlanta-based emcee?

Atlanta-based rapper Latto is one of the most driven up-and-coming artists in the music industry. After making her first television appearance on the reality television show The Rap Game in 2016, the 23-year-old has been serving big energy and steadily climbing her way up the music charts. Her contributions to the rap game, including hits such as “B-tch from Da Souf” and “Big Energy,” have already been acknowledged at some of the most significant awards shows, including the BET Awards 2021, where she earned a nomination for “Best New Artist.”

Ahead of culture’s biggest night—the BET Awards 2022—hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, check out five times rising rapper Latto served big energy.

  • 2022 Billboard Music Awards

Latto may be a rookie in the music industry, but her work ethic and stage performance are the workings of a veteran. During the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, the up-and-coming rapper gave an unforgettable performance of her latest single, “Big Energy.”

  • Funk Flex Freestyle

Latto dominated the “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” instrumental during her appearance on Funk Flex’s radio show. The rising star has big dreams of boosting her own career and giving back to her hometown with lyrics such as “I’ma put some high rise in Clayco if they cr-ckers let me.” The emcee also clarifies that she’s not letting silly internet-made feuds distract her.

  • The Rap Game

In 2016, Latto, born Alyssa Michelle Stephens, made her television debut on the competition reality show The Rap Game. She became the first winner of Jermaine Dupree-created and hosted a show showing early on her career ambitions and talent.

  • Teamed up with music legend Mariah Carey

Following the release of her latest single, “Big Energy,” which samples Tom Tom Club’s 1981 hit single, “Genius of Love,” Latto linked up with Grammy Award-winning singer Mariah Carey and DJ Khaled for the March 2022 remix. The track features an interpolation of Carey's song "Fantasy.”

  • She stands up for her fellow female musicians

While out promoting her album 777 during an appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood, the rookie revealed that a male rapper featured on the project made it difficult to clear his verse for a song because Latto refused to respond to a DM. In a later interview with The Breakfast Club, Latto revealed she decided to talk about her experience to help aspiring female artists understand the environment they’re looking to break in.
