Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 was crowned the king of the box office this weekend, coming in first place with $35 million in ticket sales. The decision to separate the family-friendly film, which stars Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Anna Faris and Terry Crews, from the glut of summer box office offerings clearly paid off for producers.
Coming up in second place was last week's winner Prisoners. The Oscar-bait drama, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis, rung up $11.2 million in ticket sales and barely beat out Ron Howard's Rush, the Formula One drama starring Chris Hemsworth that took in $11 million.
Rounding out the top five were Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut Don Jon, which features the actor in full GTL glory, and Baggage Claim. The romantic comedy, starring Paula Patton and a bevy of gorgeous men, brought in a respectable $9.4 million, just a few grand shy ofDon Jon.
It was a tough race this weekend with four new releases, but each film seemed to fare fairly well. Next week, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock's dark space drama Gravity goes up against Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake in Runner Runner.
