With the news that New York City radio deejay Mister Cee has pleaded guilty to charges in a case where he was caught engaging in oral sex with a male prostitute, the hip hop community began to discuss the ramifications the guilty admission could have on the popular deejay’s career.
Fellow NYC radio personality, co-host of Power 105’s “Breakfast Club” morning show, Charlamagne Da God weighed in on the sex scandal in an interview with BET.com.
While Charlamagne is a rival to Mister Cee’s broadcast home, Hot 97, the veteran radio host doesn’t think the outcome of the case will have much of a negative impact on Cee’s career.
“We live in an era where people are numb to everything,” Charlamagne says. “This is the same society that didn't care R. Kelly urinated on an underage girl. We are numb to everything in this society. Like seriously is being gay in 2011 a big deal? Nobody really cares.”
In fact, upon hearing the news about Cee’s guilty plea Charlamagne admits his first thoughts were, “Be free Mister Cee, be free. I wondered if this is the first step in him coming out of the closet.”
And if the respected turntablist, who was instrumental in launching the careers of rap icons Notorious B.I.G and Big Daddy Kane, were to admit he was a homosexual, Charlamagne doesn’t think it would affect his credibility with rap fans.
“It's not like he committed a crime, he just likes young boys,” Charlamagne says. “As a deejay Mister Cee could never lose credibility, he's incredible on the turntables. As a man, people might look at him like a liar or somebody who's been living a lie for a long time, but at the end of the day he's a great deejay and that's what he's known for and that's what I think people care about. I don't think people care about his personal life enough for him to lose credibility.”
Following Cee’s arrest in March, Charlamagne engaged in a very heated war of words with Hot 97’s DJ Funkmaster Flex, who came to the defense of his colleague when the cast of the “Breakfast Club” poked fun at the embarrassing sex scandal. Asked if there would be a truce in the feud Charalamagne dismisses the exchange as water under the bridge.
“It's not a war. Flex defended his territory, I defended mine,” he says. “Simple as that.”
As previously reported, Mister Cee is expected to serve 3 months or 12 sessions of counseling as part of his plea deal.
