LeBron and Savannah James Break Silence on Son Bronny's Cardiac Arrest
LeBron and Savannah James broke their silence about the terrifying experience in July 2023 when their son Bronny James Jr. suffered a cardiac arrest.
In the new Netflix docuseries “Starting 5,” the couple opened up about how the health scare deeply impacted their family, sharing their emotional journey as Bronny, now 20, continues his recovery. "I think at the end of the day, it was just about us supporting each other and just being super grateful for the outcome," Savannah said in the premiere episode.
The show also captured LeBron and his mother, Gloria James, visiting the University of Southern California, where they met Erin, a member of the medical team who immediately performed CPR on Bronny when collapsed during basketball practice. "Shout out to the man above and to the whole coaching staff, training staff, members of that program," LeBron said before calling Erin a "lifesaver, literally."
He added that the school's medical staff is "the reason Bronny is alive now and smiling and thriving and doing what any 19-year-old should be doing, and that's living out their dream."
In “Starting 5,” LeBron shared that after the cardiac arrest, Bronny’s main focus was when he would be able to get back on the basketball court. His passion for the game remained strong, and returning to play was his biggest concern during his recovery. "It’s crazy with kids, when they love something and they want something, that's all that matters to them," he said. "As a parent, you're like, ‘You had a cardiac arrest, like...,’ and in his mind he's like, 'Can I or can I not play ball again and if the answer is yes, when can I play ball again?'”
"I love that,” the NBA legend continued. "Bronny's the first person in the family to go to college.” He said that he loves seeing his son "playing the game he loves" and "to see where he is as a young man.” LeBron added, “You're like, wow, it could have been, you know, so much more worse for our family.”
As previously reported by BET, the cause of Bronny’s cardiac arrest was identified as "an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect which can and will be treated.” LeBron and Bronny recently made history by sharing the court during the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game on Sunday (Oct. 6). This rare moment gave fans a preview of what’s to come, as the upcoming NBA season could see them become the first father-son duo to play in the league together.
