A Whitney Houston Documentary Is Slated To Hit Theaters This Year

Find out when you'll be able to see the groundbreaking biopic.

A documentary portraying the life and legacy of Whitney Houston is coming soon thanks to award-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the project, titled Whitney, is reportedly the “only film officially supported by the late singer’s estate.” The documentary will supposedly include never-before-seen home movie footage, unreleased recordings and videos of live performances. It’ll also give fans an unvarnished look at Houston’s personal life.

“I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully? I was lucky enough to have the support of Pat Houston and the Whitney Houston estate in this quest,” Macdonald said in a statement. “They entrusted me with the ‘keys to the vault’ while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went. At heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew.”

You might know Kevin Macdonald from such films as Being Mick, Marley and the Oscar-winning film One Day in September.

Miramax and Roadside Attractions are slated to release Whitney to theaters in the United States and United Kingdom on July 6.

Whitney Houston passed away on February 11, 2012. She was found unresponsive in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub. The Los Angeles Coroner’s Office concluded the singer died of accidental drowning, however heart disease and cocaine use were also listed as contributing factors.

During a recent Rolling Stone interview, Bobby Brown, Whitney’s husband before passing, refuted that drug usage led to hear death. He claims that overworking herself was a much larger cause.
