Mayte Garcia Celebrates Her and Prince’s Late Son Who Died Days After Birth

Their infant son, Amiir, died six days after he was born due to a rare genetic order called Pfeiffer syndrome.

Mayte Garcia is keeping her and Prince's late son's memory alive.

On Tuesday (Nov. 7), the former dancer sat down with PEOPLE and discussed their son Amiir's short life and how his legacy is impacting others.

Baby Amiir was born in 1996 but died six days later due to a rare genetic disorder called Pfeiffer syndrome, characterized by premature fusion of certain skull bones, as cited by NORD.

"It's always painful," she told the outlet while reflecting on her child's life.

"He would have been 27 this year," she said. "But I'm on the board [for] Pfeiffer syndrome, and it makes me happy to see that children are surviving it now. There's so much more research being poured into it. When Amiir died, I couldn't find anything on it. So yes, it's painful, but it makes me happy in knowing that I'm helping someone else."

Since the death of their son, she has used her platform to give hope to others through the launch of L4OA, a charity that she and Prince initially established the same year their son died. The parents earmarked the company name to stand for "Love for Our Amiir."

Now, the foundation will be relaunched as Live 4 Love Charities to honor baby Amiir and Prince, who died in April 2016.

"I strive to honor what Prince stood for, which was always about love. So Live 4 Love is kind of the perfect name change," she explained.

"The mission statement for the original charity was about helping people in need," she continued. "Back then we didn't need fundraising because he was able to donate the money. Live 4 Love will be a public 501C, and we'll be doing fundraising, and the money raised will go towards all sorts of charitable programs, like music education for children."

The organization introduced their "10/10 project," which will donate $10,000 to 10 different charities that are nominated by the public via the website. Winners will be announced in December.
