Prince Immortalized With Highway Renaming in His Hometown
Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Prince is being honored in his home state of Minnesota after Gov. Tim Walz signed a new bill renaming the now formerly Minnesota Highway 5 after the late musical icon.
Walz, who described Prince as a “global icon” and “creative genius,” used purple ink to sign documents on Tuesday, May 9 that would honor the “Doves Cry” singer with a seven-mile roadway that runs past his Paisley Park home and recording studio in the Minneapolis suburbs of Chanhassen and Eden Prairie. The highway will now be referred to as Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway.
In a heartwarming display of fan dedication, Prince's friends and admirers raised funds to install "uniquely designed" purple road signs along the interstate by the summer.
The Minnesota Senate voted 55-5 in favor of the highway renaming, before receiving unanimous House approval on the seventh anniversary of Prince's passing. Walz, joined by Prince's sister Sharon Nelson and longtime attorney and friend Londell McMillan, lauded the artist as a "creative genius" and celebrated the fact that he called Minnesota home.
Fans from all over will be gathering in the state for Paisley Park’s Celebration 2023 from June 8th to 11th. Attendees can anticipate a musical extravaganza with a host of live performances and an exclusive chance to hear unreleased music from the artist.
