Joy Reid Says Wealthy, White Republicans Want South African-Style Apartheid To ‘Maintain Power’
Joy-Ann Reid isn’t one to hold her tongue.
The MSNBC host’s most recent unfiltered opinions were included in a video widely shared on Tuesday (Sept. 17) of her speaking at an event for the American Federation of Teachers union, the Washington Examiner reports.
In the video, she called out wealthy, white Republicans, who are willing to create a South African-style apartheid to “maintain power.” And Trump, well, he’s “merely the avatar for this.”
“No country is an eternal democracy,” she said. “And when you have a very determined minority, in this case wealthy white men and wealthy white Christian men and Christian Americans who are of the fundamental[ist] variety, who are very clear that no matter what happens if they have to pull the South Africa model to maintain power forever they will do it, and they’re not afraid of it and they’re increasingly open about it and Donald Trump is merely the avatar for this. He didn’t create it, he simply benefited from it.”
The 50-year-old reporter made the comments on a panel for “Civic Participation in an age of Democratic Peril,” adding, “I think the sooner that the majority, the actual numerical majority in this country figures that out and stop treating these elections as just foregone conclusions that you can fix it with just a simple election and that it will be free and fair, the sooner that we will wake up and actually have majority rule in this country.”
On July 24, Reid tweeted, “This is apartheid,” along with a post about the horrific experience an ICE detainee named Francisco Erwin Galicia went through for 23 days. Turns out, Galicia is a Dallas-born U.S. Citizen.
She must be doing something right, because her comments have ruffled Trump’s feathers enough to provoke one of his Twitter tirades.
“Who the hell is Joy-Ann Reid?” Trump tweeted September 14.
“Never met her, she knows ZERO about me, has NO talent, and truly doesn’t have the 'it' factor needed for success in showbiz,” he added. “Had a bad reputation, and now works for the Comcast/NBC losers making up phony stories about me. Low Ratings. Fake News!”
