Sterling K. Brown Recalls Petty Arrest Warrant At 19
While he’s currently a sought-after entertainer, Sterling K. Brown almost didn’t make it to Hollywood after getting an arrest warrant as a teen.
Brown, who stars in the new Hulu drama “Paradise,” appeared on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday (January 28), where he reflected on the incident, although he insisted that he wasn’t “out there in these streets like that.” It was actually the actor’s friend, Brian Brooks, who put him in an awkward position at the time.
“A motorcycle cop pulls me over. He goes, ‘Do you know why I pulled you over?’ And I was like, not even being sassy, ‘No sir, I don’t.’ I wasn’t speeding or anything. He goes, ‘I bet you your friend in the backseat does.’ He goes, ‘Oh, ’cause I threw a cigarette out the back?'”
The sarcasm didn’t sit well with the officer, who issued a ticket. Although Brooks swore that he would cover the ticket, it somehow followed Sterling upon his temporary return from college.
“I go off to college, I come home to renew my license. I had a warrant out for [my arrest],” Brown said. “Your boy had warrants at 19. That’s not a good feeling. I’m not that dude. I never paid it off.”
On whether he and Brooks, also called ‘Donk’ were still friends, Brown said the two had “kinda stopped talking to each other.”
On “Paradise,” which made its premiere on Monday, January 26, Brown plays Service Agent Xavier Collins, who finds U.S. president Cal Benford (James Marsden) assassinated and is framed as the primary suspect.
