Watch: Alex Rodriguez Got Emotional Announcing His Retirement

So, when will the controversial slugger play his last game?

The tumultuous relationship between Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees has come to an abrupt, painful end.

Finally ...

During a press conference Sunday, the controversial slugger emotionally announced that he will play his last game with the Yankees on Friday, before assuming a special adviser and instructor role with the team.

"This is a tough day. I love this game and I love this team," Rodriguez said, while choking up throughout his farewell address. "And today I'm saying goodbye."

Peep how emotional A-Rod got.

Welp.

That being said, we shouldn't feel bad for A-Rod at all. The Yankees are still on the hook to pay him the remainder of the $21 million in salary they owe him this season and the $21 million he's owed for next season.

That will mark the end of his 10-year, $275 million contract, which was the largest in Major League Baseball history when he signed it at the time.

Rodriguez never lived up to that mammoth deal — much to the fault of his own, as a repeat offender being involved in performance-enhancing drugs and lying about his alleged use. In fact, his 2014 full-season suspension for PED use was a then-record ... not to mention a low point in the slugger's career.

Although he walks away from the baseball diamond with a lifetime batting average of .295, 696 home runs and 2,084 RBI, with two MVPs and one World Series title, the numbers will always be considered tainted due to his involvement with PEDs. Many critics believe his apologies through the years and retirement announcement Sunday came across as fake and phony.

In the end, his paltry .204 batting average and nine homers this season — amidst the Yankees' firesale this year — was enough for them to bring this painful relationship to an end.

Fair ball?

What's next?

Well, A-Rod, 41, getting a shot as a special adviser for the Yankees could be a springboard for him to segue into a possible front office or managerial position with a Major League Baseball club someday.

Will you miss him on the baseball diamond, or good riddance to A-Fraud?
