Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew Dies at 58
Mark Ross, better known as Brother Marquis from 2 Live Crew, has died. He was 58.
The legendary hip-hop group announced his death on Monday (June 3) via social media, as reported by PEOPLE.
"Mark Ross AKA " Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has passed away #2livecrew," wrote the caption of a post. The message was also accompanied by a photo of Marquis smiling from ear to ear while rocking a chunky gold chain around his neck and a green baseball cap with the word "Miami" in orange font with a matching jacket.
According to TMZ, sources say his death "appears to be natural," and no foul play is suspected.
Marquis was born in Rochester, NY in 1966, then joined the Miami-based group 2 Live Crew at age 19 alongside members DJ Mr. Mixx, Fresh Kid Ice, and Luke Skyywalker, a.k.a Uncle Luke.
"My Condolence goes out to the Family of Brother Marquis and so many of his Fans from around the World after learning his passing," said founding member of the group, rapper Uncle Luke, whose legal name is Luther Luke Campbell. "We took on so many fights for the culture made Great music together something I would never forget."
He continued, "We had recently got back together to take on another fight to get back our catalog that was stolen from us. We will continue that fight in his name for his Family. The Brother Marquis, that I know would want us to celebrate his life that’s exactly what I’m gonna do. R.I.P My Brother."
In 1989, the group dropped a controversial album, "As Nasty as They Wanna Be," that was eventually ruled obscene by a judge and the subject of an obscenity trial. Uncle Luke and the late Fresh Kid Ice (Christopher Wong Won) were arrested for the album, along with a record store owner who continued to sell it after its banned status.
After going to trial, the case was overturned, and the rappers were acquitted. The group later disbanded in the mid-90s.
