#TheGreat28: Jaden Smith Is Ready To Be An Icon

This year, the young scion decided to embrace his power.

Jaden Smith has grown up in the public eye all while being a well-known product of two of the most beloved figures in Hollywood: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

While he started out showing that he was one to watch in films like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid, it wasn't until recently that the eclectic young scion came into his own and fully embraced his power as "an icon."

Having parents that boast the stature of the Smiths could be intimidating for many, however, the 19-year-old always seemed secure in who he is and his upbringing played an integral role in that sense of security.

In the dawn of this year, following his notable stint in Netflix's The Get Down, Jaden refocused his sights on his promising music career, with his 2017 song "Icon" picking up steam — Even his father had to give him props in his own hilarious way.

With all that he's done and all that he is yet to do, Jaden Smith continues to prove that one's signature effervescence and original aesthetic can take one far beyond where society may dictate. It is due to this determination and master of self that we honor him in our Black History Month series, #TheGreat28.
