New Hope for UK Hunger Striker

Human rights activists in London are planning to stage a vigil tomorrow (Dec. 3, 2013) following the failed deportation attempt by the British Home Office of Nigerian asylum seeker Isa Muazu.

Human rights activists in London are planning to stage a vigil on Dec. 3, following the failed deportation attempt by the British Home Office of Nigerian asylum seeker, Isa Muazu. Since his application for asylum was denied, the 45-year-old has been on a hunger strike for more than 100 days.

Following a Court of Appeal ruling last week that rejected Muazu’s appeal to remain in the U.K., the Home Office, headed by Theresa May, chartered a plane to return him to Nigeria. However on arriving in Lagos the plane was forced to turn back due to an administration error.

Confirming that Muazu was still in a critical condition and was being held in the medical wing of Hammondsworth immigration removal centre, Jasmin Sallis, a caseworker at the Unity Centre, told BET.com that the delay presents new options.
“We’ve now been able to find an immigration lawyer to represent Isa. I spoke to him an hour ago and he’s elated that he’s been able to come back,” Sallis said.
