Spike Lee Visits Wesley Snipes in Prison

The director hints about working with the Brooklyn’s Finest star in the future.

Wesley Snipes may currently be a prisoner at McKean Federal Institute, but when his bid is up he may find himself back on the big screen in another Spike Lee joint.

Shadow and Act is reporting that the Red Hook Summer director sent out tweets to his followers hinting that he and Snipes could be reuniting again soon on film.

“Yesterday I went to Pennsylvania to spend two great hours with my man Wesley Snipes,” said Lee via Twitter. “Mr. Snipes is in great shape, mentally, physically and spiritually. We laughed and joked for the whole two-hour visit. He said when he gets out — ‘It’s on.’”

When Lee’s Twitter followers asked follow-up questions about the real possibility of a future collaboration between the director and actor, the Brooklyn-reared Lee replied, “We talked about it.” And when another follower questioned the type of physical condition the 49-year-old actor was in, Lee answered, “Blade-shape.”

Lee and Snipes previously collaborated on two films in the early '90s — Mo’ Better Blues (1990), which starred Denzel Washington and Jungle Fever (1991), that featured Halle Berry. Both films were early breakout roles for Snipes, allowing the action star to portray more than a drug dealer or athlete, which was how he was usually cast. Instead, Lee's movies gave him an opportunity to be seen as leading-man material and a sex symbol.

Prior to his incarceration for tax evasion it was rumored that the Inside Man director had tapped the Blade star to play James Brown in a planned big-screen biopic on the Godfather of Soul’s life.

Unfortunately, those plans and the actor are still on ice; Snipes has only served year one of a three-year jail sentence and unless he becomes eligible for early release, he won’t be out of prison until 2014.

Here’s hoping with the help of Spike, or someone else, Snipes gets a chance to get back in the acting game again soon.
