The short list of documentary films in contention for Academy Award nominations was announced last week, and a couple of films with Black subjects made the cut. Roger Ross WilliamsGod Loves Uganda is on the list and is even considered a likely Oscar candidate, along with 20 Feet From StardomMorgan Neville's profile of back-up singers.
Other hopefuls include The Act of Killing, which has been recognized by several critics' associations, and The Armstrong Lie, an exposé of shamed cyclist Lance Armstrong.
Notably absent from the list is Shola Lynch's Free Angela and All Political Prisoners, which was one of the most talked about docs of the year, and Urbanworld Film Festival's Best Documentary prize winner The New Black. In fact, no Black female directors were recognized by the Motion Picture Academy on the documentary shortlist.
The final nominations for all categories for the 2014 Academy Awards will be announced on January 16. Click here for a complete list of the nonfiction films that made the short list.
