See Why This New 'No Makeup App' Has Everyone Furious
Today in "Men Are Trash" news: an alleged ex-Russian propagandist has created an app that claims to show what women look like "without makeup." It's basically the "this is why you take your girl swimming on the first date" meme, but an app. Sigh.
Given the ridiculous nature of the app, the accuracy should be taken with a grain of salt. As proven by many who have tried out the app themselves, it actually significantly dramatizes subjects' so-called "natural" faces.
The misogynistic argument of it being "unfair" that women, in their opinion, purport to positively transform themselves through using makeup is tired, ignorant and objectively dumb.
Like, maybe stop advertising umpteen products that women "need," perpetually hiring young actresses to star opposite old geezer counterparts and conflating youth and beauty with self worth and value and then we can have a chat about why women feel societal pressures put an emphasis on appearance.
Back in the day, we thought artificial intelligence (AI) could one day whip us up a dessert with a mere voice command, a la Smart House (the Disney channel original movie from 1999). The future is now and dudes are out here just trying to use AI to make us ugly to prove a point. Welp.
AI is not the friendliest to brown people, as evidenced by FaceApp's controversial existence. It was reported earlier this year that FaceApp's "hot" feature whitewashed POCs. The same is true of Snapchat's "pretty" filter.
We tried MakeApp out on Serena Williams, our queen, as she has ample photos of herself both with and without makeup, to see how it works. [Editor's Note: Serena is not affiliated with the app in any way — we just wanted to test the technology on someone famous!]
This is what we found:
Unsurprisingly, it's not flattering. At long last, another useless app literally no one needs!
