See Cuba Gooding Jr. as an Escaped Slave in New Film
Cuba Gooding Jr. is gunning for that second Oscar with his role in Freedom. The actor plays Samuel Woodward, a runaway slave in the antebellum South who links his fearlessness and perseverance to his great grandfather, who traveled across the ocean on a slave ship a century prior.
The movie takes place in 1856 and connects the stories of Gooding’s character and Captain John Newton, an overseer on a ship during the transatlantic slave trade, where Woodward’s great grandfather was a passenger and crossed paths with Newton.
Inspired by true events, the film will be released in theaters, VOD and iTunes on June 5. Freedom also stars Sharon Leal and Terrence Mann.
