Box Office: The Martian Is Out of This World
While scientists are still trying to figure out if there can be life on Mars, we now know that Matt Damon‘s new flick The Martian is alive and well at the box office. The space drama won the weekend with a huge $55 million opening, very nearly beating the October record currently held by Gravity.
The 3D space film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara and Jessica Chastain.
Coming in second place is the animated family film Hotel Transylvania 2, which held strong with an additional $33 million. Taking the third spot was Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin's critically-lauded action movie Sicario, which expanded nationwide with a $12 million gross.
Rounding out the top five were The Intern and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which earned $11.6 million and $7.6 million, respectively.
Next week, the Oscar race heats up with the arrival of Steve Jobs, director Danny Boyle's biopic on the Apple icon.
It's going to be a big year for Chiwetel, with attention-grabbing roles in Z for Zachariah, The Martian and The Secret in Their Eyes. Rewind to Chewie's career-making role in 12 Years a Slave below:
