Misty Copeland could not look more graceful as she dances across the cover of Essence magazine’s September issue. The first Black female principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre poses in a blue and purple Zimmermann dress and seems to practically defy gravity with arms and legs for days! In her interview, Copeland gushed about her engagement to longtime boyfriend Olu Evans and all the good fortune that’s currently swirling around her.
“I can’t believe my life right now,” the 32-year-old ballerina said.
Copeland is also aware that with her new role comes great responsibility and one she is not taking lightly. She hopes to continue learning from those who’ve come before her while serving as a mentor and guide for the dancers who aspire to someday dance in her shoes.
“I’m going to continue to be who I am and my experiences as a Black woman have made me who I am,” Copeland said. “All of a sudden now that I am in this position, I’m not going to say, ‘I’m just a dancer.’ It’s a huge deal because I’m a Black woman. That’s why it’s a big deal.”
