This Day in Black History: Jan. 12, 1948
U.S. Supreme Court rules that qualified Black students in Oklahoma are to be admitted into all-white state law schools. Also, the University of Tennessee begins admitting Black students.
In the case of Sipuel v. Oklahoma State Board of Regents, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the state of Oklahoma grant admission to qualified Black students applying to previously all-white state law schools and that the state must provide equal educational opportunities regardless of race, overturning the Supreme Court of Oklahoma decision.
Also on this day, in 1952, the University of Tennessee begins admitting Black students.
