Def Jam Celebrates 30 Years With Special Concert
Def Jam is celebrating 30 years of music in a major way. To commemorate three decades since Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons founded what grew to become one of the most influential imprints in hip hop, the label is commissioning previous and current artists for the Def Jam Recording's 30th Anniversary Concert to be held at the Brooklyn Barclays Center Oct. 16.
2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Foxy Brown, Onyx, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Method Man, Redman, EPMD, Warren G, Jhené Aiko and Jeremih are all billed to touch the stage for the one-night only event. "It’s very exciting to be able to be part of such a special announcement that solidifies and continues forward the enduring mark the brand has made on pop culture,” said Def Jam Ceo Steve Bartels.
In addition to the big show, the label released Def Jam 30, curated by Rubin. The commemorative turntable-style box set features classic and current tracks from Def Jam artists along with a booklet and T-shirt.
Founded in a New York University dorm room in 1984, Def Jam was integral in expanding hip hop to new heights early on. The label has been home to groundbreaking veteran hip hop acts like LL Cool J, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys, in addition to a wave of game changers that include Kanye West, Jay Z and Jeezy.
