Mattel Honors Black Designers With 45th Anniversary Barbie
In time for Black History Month, Mattel is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the brand’s Black Barbie–and its creator, Kitty Black Perkins–with Black In Fashion Council. On Wednesday, February 19, Mattel announced its new partnership with BIFC as an initiative to motivate diversity and encourage young Black girls to pursue design-related fields.
“It has been so rewarding to witness our organization Black in Fashion Council drive long-lasting change in the fashion industry. Now we can add Barbie to our list of partners who share our commitment to breaking down barriers and creating more opportunities for future generations of Black designers,” stated Lindsay Peoples, co-Founder of Black in Fashion Council (BIFC).
As part of the BHM celebration, the round-up of designers includes Larissa Muehleder, founder and Creative Director of Muehleder, designer Nia Thomas, and Fumi Egbon of Fumi the Label.
In honor of the 45th anniversary milestone, Perkins and Barbie have launched a limited-edition 45th Black Barbie, while a 1980s-themed Black Barbie Collection and a Black History Month apparel line are also available for purchase on Amazon.
