Issa Rae Drops The First Teaser For Her New Show ‘Rap Sh!t’
Issa Rae didn’t slow down after Insecure’s series finale. Almost three years since it was first announced, the visionary actor/writer’s new show Rap Sh!t is coming soon on HBO Max.
Premiering on July 21, the eight-episode half-hour series will focus on the challenges women face when trying to break into the Hip Hop industry. The trailer, which was posted by Issa herself on Monday (June 13), follows two estranged high school friends from Miami – Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), who reunite to form a rap group.
“I think this is just such a unique time in Hip Hop, especially when it comes to female rappers, because there’s such an abundance, and it doesn’t feel like they’re all in competition with each other,” Issa said of the series during a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “I’m a child of the ’90s, and there used to always be a tendency to put two women against one another. It feels like we’re in an era where there’s such a supportive environment now because of that abundance. All of that, combined with just my own story of coming up, became the next story that I wanted to tell.”
Issa Rae serves as an executive producer of Rap Sh!t along with showrunner Syreeta Singleton. Yung Miami and JT of the City Girls, on whom the series is loosely based, are co-executive producers.
