New England Patriots Send Albert Haynesworth Packing

Just months after the mind-boggling acquisition of troubled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the New England Patriots have seen enough and cut the under-performing former free agent.

Just months after the mind-boggling acquisition of troubled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the New England Patriots have seen enough.

The Patriots cut the under-performing Haynesworth on Tuesday, just a couple days after an awful performance during a loss to the New York Giants. Haynesworth hasn’t been the same player since he signed a $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins as a free agent.

He was a colossal failure with the Redskins, battling with coaches, complaining about the defensive scheme, refusing to play and then having off the field problems. Haynesworth appeared on his way to becoming a malcontent in New England where he reportedly had words with assistant coach Pepper Johnson after he was pulled for ineffective play on a 10-yard touchdown run by the Giants.

Haynesworth had been bothered by back problems this season, but in six games he recorded just three tackles and no sacks.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick gave Haynesworth a way out of D.C. this summer when he acquired the 6-foot-6, 350 pound defensive tackle for a fifth round draft pick in 2013. Haynesworth agreed to drop his salary from $5.4 million to $1.5 million this season with no signing bonus, meaning he was a low-risk pickup for the Patriots.
