Third Arrest Made in Videotaped 'Gang Rape' on Florida Beach
Florida police have arrested a third man in the "gang rape" of an incapacitated woman on Panama City Beach, a popular spring break destination, Reuters reports.
The mid-March assault occurred in broad daylight amid hundreds of spring breakers and was captured on a cellphone video.
George Davon Kennedy, a 21-year-old student at Middle Tennessee State University, has been charged with sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, authorities announced this week.
Last week, Delonte Martistee, 22, of Georgia and Ryan Calhoun, 23, of Alabama were both arrested on the same charges. Troy University in Alabama has suspended both students, according to a statement.
"There's hundreds, hundreds of people standing there — watching, looking, seeing, hearing what's going on," Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen told CNN. "And yet our culture and our society and our young people have got to the point where obviously this is acceptable somewhere. I will tell you it is not acceptable in Bay County."
AP reports that the victim told authorities she thought she had been drugged and did not remember the incident well enough to report it. The incident was only uncovered because police were investigating an unrelated March 28 shooting.
While the video is "one of the most disgusting, repulsive, sickening things that I've seen this year on Panama City Beach," it's not an isolated occurence, McKeithen said.
"This is not the first video we've recovered. It's not the second video. It's not the third video. There's a number of videos we've recovered with things similar to this, and I can only imagine how many things we haven't recovered."
