Tiffany Haddish Says Painful Endometriosis Battle Feels Like She Is "Dying"
Tiffany Haddish is getting candid on private details about her health.
In a new interview with PEOPLE that dropped on Thursday (April 25), the comedian revealed she was recently diagnosed with endometriosis. Of that diagnosis, she now understands why her menstrual cycles have been so agonizing.
"My body be playing tricks on me," the "Girls Trip" star told the outlet. "I'm pretty sure the devil is real because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down."
"I'm be like, 'Am I dying?'" she said of the pain from the condition where endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, as cited by John Hopkins Medicine. The condition affects 10% of women between the ages of 15 and 44.
To soothe the pain, the "I Curse You With Joy" author's doctor prescribed medicine, but the side effects make her sleepy, to the point where she passes out.
At one point, doctors misidentified a dent on her uterus. "It turns out it's not a dent they saw on the ultrasound. It was endo that was hanging down. It looked like a dent but it was just extra layers." That concern was treated by undergoing "a fibroid [removal] thing."
Additionally, Haddish has suffered multiple pregnancy losses due to this condition. Her latest miscarriage occurred last year.
"It's so f - - - ing devastating," she said. "Every time I find out I'm pregnant, I’m like, ‘Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do nothin’," she added. "Even if I don’t really want [the baby], I still try to give it a chance.”
She continued, "It's like, I won't know why there's so much blood. And then I go to the doctor and they're like, 'Oh, you're miscarrying right now. And I just D&C (dilation and curettage, a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue)".
While dating "multiple guys," and admitting she's not looking to get married again or become a mom, "there is a part of me that wants to,” while referring to motherhood.
“I’ve got all this love, I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”
