Young Thug Encourages Emory Law Students to Pursue Defense Careers in FaceTime Talk After Release
Young Thug recently participated in a FaceTime call with law students at Emory Law School in Atlanta, which his lawyer, Brian Steel, facilitated.
In videos shared by students on social media, the rapper encouraged the group to pursue careers as defense attorneys, praising Steel and the value of his work. “We had a situation that was daunting towards my life, and I think that the justice system could be bad,” he remarked. “You know, sometimes it could be bad, and you gotta always look at it, like, they're there to put us in prison, and you guys are here to keep us from prison.”
Speaking about his lawyer, Thug added, “Brian Steel is the best person possible. He's very pedagogical, and he should be a professor,” which brought laughter from the classroom.
Continuing his message, the “Best Friend” hitmaker said, “I think you guys should become lawyers. I think it's very important to help people out of the situations they're in the best you can. I mean, what side do you wanna be on? You wanna put people in prison for mistakes? Because everybody makes mistakes, we're human. And everybody in this classroom, you always need to know that you’re one mistake away.”
After spending over 900 days behind bars, Thug was released from custody last Thursday (Oct. 31) following a guilty plea in his YSL RICO case. Under the terms of his sentence, he faces 40 years, with credit for time served, a 15-year probation period, and a 20-year suspended prison term—meaning he’ll only serve that time if he violates probation conditions.
He concluded the talk, saying, “Anything you need from me, I’m here always. We need y’all.”
