Janelle Monae Announces New Album With Sensual New ‘Lipstick Lover’ Visual
Janelle Monáe is in her pleasure era.
The Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter recently announced their official return to the music scene with a sultry new single titled “Lipstick Lover,” accompanied by a scorching music video.
In the visual, co-directed by Alan Ferguson and Monáe, the 37-year-old sings about their love for women while surrounded by dozens of bikini-clad beauties lounging poolside, each wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the song’s title and the word “Pleasure” as they all partied into the late hours.
“As we enter into ‘The Age Of Pleasure’ ‘Lipstick Lover’ is our freeassmothafucka anthem inspired by f.a.m. for f.a.m.,” in the album's press release. “This is our oasis made with love, rooted in self-acceptance, throbbing in self-discovery, and signed with cherry red kisses from me to you.”
In an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Monáe talked about the creative process, telling the music journalist that “All the songs were written from such an honest space.”
They continued. “So I hope that people feel that when they listen to the music, that they feel that when they come and, you know, counter with me when I’m around, I definitely have had an opportunity to evolve and grow and to tap into the things that bring me pleasure, the things that perhaps I should rethink and rework.”
The project marks the musician’s first studio album since the arrival of their 2018 critically acclaimed project, Dirty Computers.
The Age of Pleasure will arrive on June 9 via Wondaland Arts Society/Atlantic Records and will feature 14 tracks, including their lead single, “Float.” Check out the tracklist and the official video of “Lipstick Lover” below.
