Former NFL Pro Bowl And Super Bowl Star Demaryius Thomas Dies At Age 33

Authorities believe he died from a medical issue.

Demaryius Thomas, a star NFL wide receiver who won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, was found dead Thursday night (Dec. 9) at his suburban Atlanta home. He was 33 years old.

Officer Tim Lupo of the Roswell Police Department told CNN that their preliminary investigation suggests Thomas died from a medical issue.

The police notified Thomas’ family members at about 9 p.m. on Thursday and told them that officers found Thomas in a shower at his Roswell home, according to the Associated Press.

“He had been suffering from seizures for over a year, and we believe he had a seizure when he was showering,” LaTonya Bonseigneur, Thomas’s first cousin, told the AP.

Bonseigneur said Thomas was alone when he died. The first sign of trouble came when Thomas’ friend couldn’t contact him, so the friend called Thomas’ driver, who has a key to the house because of the seizures.

Thomas, who retired from the NFL in June, was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. The league said, “The NFL family mourns the tragic loss of Demaryius Thomas and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

The Denver Broncos selected Thomas, a Georgia Tech college player, in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent most of his career with the Broncos, where he helped the team win two AFC Championships and Super Bowl 50, and finished his career with the New York Jets.

“We are devastated and completely heartbroken,” the Broncos stated. “Demaryius' humility, warmth, kindness and infectious smile will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him.”
