A TLC Documentary Is Coming To A&E In 2021

The two-hour special will chronicle the legendary R&B group’s meteoric rise to fame.

A new documentary special about TLC is in the works.

  • On Thursday (Oct. 30), Billboard confirmed that A&E  had greenlit a two-hour feature film set to premiere on the network sometime in 2021. Titled Biography, the film will chronicle the legendary R&B group’s meteoric rise to fame in the ‘90s. The documentary will be directed by Matt Kay with Roger Ross Williams executive-producing through his production company with Geoff Martz, One Story Up.

The documentary will feature interviews with surviving members Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins.

  • “As someone who has long been in awe of TLC and their musical and cultural impact, I am thrilled to be a part of bringing the story of their music, their journey, and their continuing reverence to the screen," Williams said in a press statement obtained by Billboard. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with A&E, as well as filmmaker Matthew Kay, to bring this film to life. We hope this film illuminates a side of this incredible group and Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, and Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas that longtime fans and viewers alike have not seen before.”

  • Formed in 1991, TLC launched into the mainstream’s consciousness with their introductory, Ooooooohhh…On the TLC Tip. The R&B trio’s sophomore effort, CrazySexyCool, cemented their spot in music history, selling more than ten million records. TLC would go on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time with chart-topping, trailblazing hits such as “Creep,” “Waterfalls,” “No Scrubs,” and “Unpretty.” Tragically, in 2002, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was killed in a car accident during a trip to Honduras, but the R&B trio’s legacy continues to live on.
