‘Divorce In The Black’ Stars Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict Share How The Film Has Helped Them Heal And Grow

Tyler Perry also discusses where he drew inspiration for the tough and emotional scenes in the film.

In the latest cinematic endeavor from Tyler Perry, "Divorce in the Black" delves deep into the complexities and emotional landscapes of relationships torn apart. This compelling narrative brings together a powerhouse trio: Perry, Cory Hardrict, and Meagan Good, who have all experienced divorce in their personal lives. Each of these talented artists brings a unique perspective to the film, and their collective journey through the trials of separation lends a raw authenticity to their performances, making this film a work of art and a form of personal healing.

The film promises to resonate deeply with audiences, offering a profound exploration of the human condition through the lens of those who have lived it. The synergy between Perry's visionary direction, Hardrict's emotional depth, and Good's captivating presence ensures that "Divorce in the Black" is not just a story about divorce but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Good shared with BET how the project has helped her grow and heal from her past experiences.

“I believe as human beings, we all have our own purpose, but we also have a collective purpose, and that collective purpose is to help each other. It gives us more authority to say, ‘I understand what you're going through,’ because we've been through something or something similar. It allows you to heal, and it allows you to grow. The journey is never for nothing – it’s always for something, and that’s a blessing.”

As for Hardrict, the “All American” star expressed that while he isn’t healing now, he focuses on his work and moving towards his God-given purpose. “I’m taking care of my babies and I feel like a new artist – I'm just trying to be the best I can be,” he explained.

Personal closure and embracing new beginnings can be challenging for most when transitioning from a longtime relationship. Good shared how Perry pushed her to let her guard down during a face-off scene with Hardrict.

“I have a tendency to put up a wall of protection. When something that I don't like happens or someone tries to challenge me, I tend to smile it off. Tyler was challenging me in this particular moment, and it was kind of a face-off between Cory’s character, Dallas, and my character, Ava. He said he was challenging me to take all those walls down, to take down every air, every ego, every protection, and just move from this place. He then said, 'From this place, I want you to attack it,' and that brought something different out in me.”

She then opened up about the healing process, sharing how the film “allows us to draw from a really, really deep well, and it allows us to call on life experiences and some things that we've never even experienced, some things that we can relate to, but not in a certain way. We just have to kind of figure it out and put it together and be as authentic as possible.”

Hardrict added that, as an introvert, he uses every film and television experience as a “therapeutic experience.”

“I’m laid back – I go hide in the cave and stuff like that. When it's time to work, I want to bring out everything into a camera, and I want to leave it there. [Tyler Perry] allowed me to be my best, which is rare. I gave it all I had and I had a great time doing this. God is truly real.”

Perry also discusses how the film influenced his outlook on healing and closure, sharing that it’s very important to close one door before opening a new one.

“You don't want any of that light to bleed in on what you got next or what you close the door on. In the film, I wanted to make sure that Ava had shut down, closed one door, stopped one moment before she opened another because in the movie, she says, I don't have time for a man – I just want to work on myself and I think that’s important.”

There are a lot of emotional and gut-wrenching scenes in “Divorce In The Black,” and Perry shared where he drew from to execute these emotional and challenging scenes audiences will see.

“When I start writing something, a character will show up and say a couple of things, and I'll write it down and go on and do something else and then something else,” he began.

“When Ava first showed up, she was telling me all these things and I was writing it down. She was saying she wasn't a victim – just as the character starts to talk and I write the script, I think about who can play the role. [Meagan Good] and I have wanted to work together for a very long time. I didn’t realize she was going through a divorce at the time I was writing the script and with Cory going through his own divorce, So I think it was a catharsis for both of them to be able to just let the characters be as wild and say whatever they wanted to say which is why it was so powerful and so real.”

Perry has been met with mixed criticism online about his films, and as a filmmaker, sometimes you can lean into the influence of what the majority may want to see from your works. As for Perry, he shares who he writes for.

“I don't write for critics. I write for my audience, whom I've always written for,” he said.

“They have been my focus and my ride or die. That's why 20 years ago, the movie was number one, and then the last thing I did on Netflix was number one. It's just focusing on the ride or dies – the opinions come and go. As long as my folks are happy, I'm good to go. I think they're gonna be really happy with this one.”
