Well, this is odd. Tyler the Creator and his controversial rap group Odd Future attempted to mend fences with anti-violence groups—the same ones handing out flyers to deter people from listening to Odd Future's music—at Sunday's Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago by handing out…boxes of cupcakes.
“They took some of the fans, too,” said Amanda Wapiennik with Family Shelter Service. “One of them said, ‘See, we’re nice.’ I said, ‘We never said you weren’t.’ That’s exactly the kind of dialogue and exchange we’re looking for.”
But once they hit the stage, the sweet talk was over. Odd Future performed their usual set of songs with violent lyrics about race, money and police. But they did take a moment to give a acknowledge their new friends. “A big shoutout to the domestic violence groups out here,” group leader Tyler the Creator shouted right before the next song, “I Got a Gun (You Better Run).”
