DJ Megatron Killer Pleads Guilty
After tragedy struck the BET family two years ago, there’s finally a little closure.
The man accused of murdering 106 & Park fixture DJ Megatron in a robbery almost two years ago took a plea Tuesday and will spend the next 21 years in prison.
William Williams, 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. He faced trial for second-degree murder and a potential sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.
“After careful reflection and thought, my client decided this was in his best interest,” said Mario Gallucci, Williams’ lawyer.
Megatron, real name Corey McGriff, was a personality and DJ on 106 & Park, known for his popular segment “What’s Good” and his Web show “On Blast.” He was also a mixer on Hot 97 and previously spun at Boston's WBOT-FM, Philadelphia's WPHI-FM and New York’s Kiss FM alongside Fatman Scoop.
Megatron was murdered in March 2011. Williams and accomplice Richard Cromwell had been stalking him, prosecutors said, thinking he’s make a good target as a rising radio and TV star. Williams shot Megatron in the chest and the duo then took the dying DJ’s cash and a watch given to him by his then 11-year-old daughter. Both men were arrested in April 2011 and charged with murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. Cromwell’s next court date is Feb. 27, records show.
Megatron is survived by his fiancée, Shyleen Robinson, and three children.
The BET family sends them our continued condolences at this difficult time. R.I.P. Megatron.
