‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ Alum Monique Samuels Files for Divorce From Husband Chris Samuels

The couple, who married in 2012, has three children.

Sadly, another Black couple we were rooting for is now going their separate ways. Monique Samuels has filed to end her union with her husband, Chris Samuels, with whom she shares children Chase, 4, Milani, 7, and Christopher, 10. The Montgomery County Family Court has confirmed the divorce filing to PEOPLE.

Their arrival at divorce has included many twists and turns. The first round of trouble in paradise came after the 39-year-old Real Housewives of Potomac alum filed a complaint to end their marriage on April 14, as reported by PEOPLE. But she filed an amendment to that request less than 90 days later. The outlet also reports that they are expected to appear in court on June 21.

Though she is no longer on RHOP, she says the show acted as a force that brought her and Chris back together.

She spilled the tea with ET last July of her then-improved relationship with Chris, saying, "We had lost all of the dating in our marriage. Once we started filming reality TV, it actually helped us because it forced us to date. She added, "So we were able to get out, just reignite that intimacy and be excited about each other."

Last year, PEOPLE reported that the Samuels had decided to separate after their decade-long union. But Monique and Chris refuted that information in a YouTube video.

In the 69-minute long video, Monique said, "When you say the word 'separation,' that insinuates the road to divorce. Are Chris and I getting a divorce? No, we're not getting a divorce. Are Chris and I going our separate ways?... Absolutely not. Nobody ever said that. OK?"

She continued, "Have we filed a legal separation? No! Have we filed for divorce? No! Is there any document that proves of any divorce filings? No! Have we separated to the extent of breaking up? No."

"We didn't break up. We're not looking to divorce. We're simply trying to be better," she said. "We basically said... let's go back to the beginning, fix on ourselves on an individual level... and then focus on our friendship... and then focus on what we both want for our marriage... We needed a change that would work for us... We were not connecting like we should be, like we used to."

During the video, Chris indicated that the lack of communication on his part had been problematic during their relationship. "I been hurt so much by people who was really close to me through that years, really close to me, friends and family." He added that he "held back" important conversations from Monique due to unresolved personal areas in his life. "My heart was scarred, and I held back a lot of stuff from my wife."

Chris also said he had learned the significance of “digging up a lot of this stuff, dealing with it” and “putting it behind me so I can be the better me”, while in therapy.
