Soul Train Awards 2022: Who is Steve Lacy? Meet R&B's New Rockstar
Multi-talented musician Steve Lacy first rose to fame as the lead guitarist of the alternative neo-soul group The Internet. After several successful projects, including their critically acclaimed 2015 album Ego Death, the Cali native found solo success with the release of his breakout hit “Bad Habit.”
This year the rising earned himself four nominations at the Soul Train Awards 2022, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year. Ahead of this year’s ceremony, hosted by comedian Deon Cole, get to know r&b’s rising rockstar.
He gained recognition as the guitarist of The Internet
Steve joined the alternative-soul band, The Internet in 2015 when he was just 17 as not just the new guitarist and vocalist for the band but also as a co-executive producer alongside bandmates Matt Martians and Syd Tha Kyd. This was the first time he had ever produced, let alone made an album.

Steve is quite a commodity in the music industry. The multi-talent musician has worked with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Calvin Harris, Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, Vampire Weekend, Solange, and J. Cole, to name just a few.
He’s not afraid to collaborate with other artists
The multitalented musician began making his own beat after joining The Internet. He would later cold-pitch them to fellow aspiring artists he admired via DMs and email, the likes of Isaiah Rashad, GoldLink, and Denzel Curry.
