Inside Swizz Beatz’s No Commission Art Show in the South Bronx
If you were in the New York area last week and did not hit Swizz Beatz’s No Commission Art Show in the Bronx, you’re about to catch a serious case of FOMO. After his Dean Collection crushed it at last year’s Miami Art Basel, the hip-hop recording artist, producer, DJ and all around musical genius brought his love for contemporary art back to his hometown of the South Bronx. Swizz Beatz, aka Kaseem Dean, partnered once again with Bacardi for the four-day art fair (August 11-14), which allowed emerging artists to walk away with the full cut of their sales instead of the typical 50/50 split most galleries require.
The show included performances by A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, Fabolous and more as well as celebrity guests, such as Fat Joe and June Ambrose. But in keeping with Dean’s “for the people, by the people” theme, admission to the star-studded event was free and had anyone remotely involved in the urban culture scene in the tri-state area flocking to the show.
BET Digital caught up with Swizz during the show’s opening and he spoke to us about his goal of selling out the art fair. Get an insider’s peek into the event below:
What’s more is that No Commission sold 98 percent of the artwork in the showcase. Dean took to Instagram to express his gratitude:
"Grand closing 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Thank you! 98% of the artist work sold ! Oh yes in the Bronx! The artist took home 100% the people came free! We made history ! Thx my partners #bacardi for the real support 🙏🏽 #Bronx #nocommission#ifyoufreetheartistyoufreetheworld !!!"
The fair’s success is a testament Dean’s art dealer skills, and we’ll be looking out to see what city he takes his No Commission show next.
