Pro-Mehmet Oz Group Releases Attack Ad Against John Fetterman For Pulling A Gun On Black Jogger

Oz and Fetterman are running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Mehmet Oz is the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania and is struggling in the polls against Democratic challenger John Fetterman. After weeks of bad press, including reminders from Fetterman’s campaign that Oz lives in New Jersey, a pro-Oz group is trying to attract Black voters to their candidate by highlighting a troubling incident from Fetterman’s past.

In 2013, when serving as mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Fetterman heard fireworks he believed to be gunshots and then saw a man running. Fetterman chased down the jogger with a shotgun and detained the man until police arrived. The Black man Fetterman saw running, Chris Miyares, was not committing any crime, and had no cause for being threatened and held for police.

Fetterman refused to apologize when he was confronted about the incident while on the campaign trail during the April 2022 primaries. Miyares, who is now incarcerated for an unrelated offense, told The Philadelphia Inquirer in April 2021 that he forgives and supports Fetterman.

According to NBC News, the Oz ad cost $500,000 and is airing on various networks, including BET. There are concerns the ad could impact Black voters, who make up 11 percent of voters in Pennsylvania.

A statement to NBC News read: "While Oz spends his time in his mansions in New Jersey, John Fetterman was the three term mayor of Braddock, a majority Black town, and has worked hand in hand with the black community for years. Black voters are excited to vote for John because of his long record, and because they know he will fight for them in Washington.”
