David Banner Says America Has Turned Its Back on Black People
When news hit yesterday (July 27) that all outstanding charges against the officers related to the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray were dropped, David Banner spoke up on the matter, saying the lack of convictions is further proof “America has turned its back on Black people.”
The rapper/activist continues to be one of the most outspoken within the hip-hop community, consistently speaking up in support of Black lives and against police brutality.
In a statement, Banner shared his absolute disgust for the charges being dropped, stating that that decision proves the laws are not the same for members of law enforcement.
“In the case of Freddie Gray, America has clearly shown that it has completely turned its back on Black people,” Banner said. “Apparently, the laws are not the same for the police. We lose our lives; they get paid vacation. What are Black people to do about it is a better question!”
Each of the six acquitted officers who were assigned to Gray all stated that he died during a “rough ride” while in transport in their police van on April 19, 2015.
YG, among other members of the hip-hop community, also shared Banner’s sentiment, offering on Twitter, “the police get away wit murder. #freddiegray.”
Banner remains outraged about the state of current relations between people of color and law enforcement, boldly taking his political statements to his music by way of enacting the killing of a police officer in his music video for his track “Black Fist” earlier this summer.
