Regina King Speaks Out on The Death of Her Son in First Public Interview Since His Death
Regina King is opening up on the death of her only son.
On Thursday (March 14), King did her first televised interview with "Good Morning America" since her son, Ian Alexander Jr., died by suicide in 2022. During her one-on-one exclusive with co-host Robin Roberts, she discussed how her son's death has impacted her life, as reported by PEOPLE.
When asked by Roberts, "What have these last two years been like for you?" King didn't hold back.
"Oh wow. I'm a different person now than I was Jan. 19. I am," she said.
"Grief is a journey," King continued. "I understand that."
"Grief is love that has no place to go," she added. "And that we all handle it differently."
In January 2022, Ian died days after his 26th birthday. King shares Ian with ex-husband record producer Ian Alexander Sr.
In King’s upcoming film, “Shirley,” she said the film has been dedicated in his honor.
“It’s important to me to honor Ian in the totality of who he is,” she explained.
Before Ian's death, he sought therapy to treat his mental health.
“I respect Ian’s choice that he didn’t want to be here anymore and that’s a hard thing for other people to receive because they did not live our experience, did not live Ian’s journey,” said King. “My favorite thing about myself is being Ian’s mom and I can’t say that with a smile, with tears, with all of the emotion that comes with that. I can’t do that if I did not respect the journey.”
While time has passed since Ian’s death, King said she often feels his presence, but, “the sadness will never go away” adding, “the sadness is a reminder of how much he means to me.”
