This Week in Good Black News: Black Women, Black Graduates and New Black History Keep Headlines Shining
There is no shortage of good Black news to tap into this week, and honestly, we love to see it.
Black women are making history in spaces that have long shut them out, Black men are walking across graduation stages with degrees in hand, Black girlhood is getting its flowers on one of fashion’s biggest nights, and the rap girls are continuing to prove that they can dominate music, business, and any stage, especially the big Broadway one… all at once. The culture is moving, and the wins are stacking up.
First up, Kwanza Jones is poised to make history as part of the investor group set to take control of the San Diego Padres, a deal that could make her the first Black woman majority owner in MLB history if it clears league approval.
According to the Associated Press, the Padres have reached an agreement to sell control of the team to a group led by Jones and José E. Feliciano, with the sale still pending approval from Major League Baseball. AP also reported that Jones said the move is about “more than baseball,” calling it an opportunity to invest in community, deepen belonging, and bring a World Series championship to San Diego.
Next, J.R. Smith is adding a new title to his résumé: college graduate. The two-time NBA champion is set to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a focus on Applied Cultural Thought from North Carolina A&T State University, a milestone that comes after he began his college journey there as a member of the golf team. For Smith, who has spoken about academics being one of his weakest areas, the achievement marks a major personal win.
Then there was Blue Ivy Carter, who officially made her Met Gala debut alongside Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Blue stepped out in a white strapless Balenciaga gown with an unzipped jacket, sunglasses (that everyone from Bey to Jay to Julius begged her to remove), and silver crystal stilettos, while Beyoncé told Vogue, “I think she looks so incredible.” The moment was a full-circle family affair and another reminder that Blue Ivy is growing up right in front of our eyes — and doing it in style.
And over in Thee Stallion multiverse, the wins keep coming. Entrepreneur put Megan Thee Stallion on the cover and centered her as a businesswoman with staying power, spotlighting her belief that success is “not about being seen” but about being understood. Megan also explained that she had to separate Megan Pete from Megan Thee Stallion, and said her brand was shaped by the values she learned from her grandmother and great-grandmother. As if that was not enough Meg love, fellow rap queen Cardi B showed up to support Megan’s final Broadway performance in Moulin Rouge!, praising her stage turn and telling fans, “Megan did amazing.”
