Soul Train Awards 2022: Xscape Sets the Scene for 90’s R&B With These Iconic Tracks
“Kandi” Burruss-Tucker, Tameka "Tiny" Harris, Tamika Scott, and LaTocha Scott of legendary, multi platinum-selling R&B supergroup Xscape will collectively receive the "Lady of Soul" honor at “Soul Train Awards” 2022, making them the second group in the ceremony’s history to do so. Since their inception in the early 90s, the Atlanta-based group set the stage for what a blend of raw r&b and hip hop could look and sound like through their music and fashion.
Ahead of this year’s celebration of the soul and r&b genre, hosted by award-winning actor and comedian Deon Cole, we taking a trip down memory lane and looking back at the group’s contributing moment.
“Who Can I Run To?”
Originally performed by The Jones Girls in 1979 for their self-titled 1979 debut album, The Jones Girls, fellow r&b group Xscape covered the single in 1995 for their second studio album, Off the Hook. The song shot to number 1 R&B and number 8 pop hit. Legendary producer Jermaine Dupri produced the record.
“My Little Secret”
Jermaine Dupri, legendary recording producer Manuel Seal, Jr., and group member LaTocha Scott wrote the second single from their third studio album, Traces of My Lipstick. The r&b soul single finds the ladies singing about their sexual relationship while admitting to doing a little sidestepping. The record became their last song to crack the top ten charts before disbanding.
“Just Kickin’ It”
“Just Kickin’ It” is the group’s most commercially successful track, written by longtime collaborators Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at number one on the Hot R&B Singles chart. The music video has been viewed over 56 million times on YouTube.

“Understanding”
Frequent collaborator Manuel Seal penned the hip hop soul track for the ladies’ 1993 debut album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha. The record spent two weeks at the no. one spot on the Hot R&B singles chart.
“Do You Want To”
While this 1996 record might not have performed as well as Xscape’s other records, we couldn’t leave this little number off the list. The single appeared on the group’s second studio album, Off the Hook, with Tiny and Latocha sharing lead vocals. The visual for the record received over 34 million views on YouTube.
The Soul Train Awards 2022 premieres Saturday, November 26 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET and BET Her.
