The Soul Train Awards 2022 are just a few weeks away, and it’s set to be a celebration of r&b and soul, all hosted by award-winning comedian and actor Deon Cole, that you won’t want to miss. Ahead of this year’s ceremony, we’re touching on all things soulful, from throwback moments, memorable Soul Train performances, and today’s biggest hits inspired by the genre. So join us as we look back at three visuals that exude soul and this year’s nominees behind them.

  • Lizzo

Lizzo delivers another uplifting track with her April 2022 record “About Damn Time” from her fourth studio album Special. The single debuted at number 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in its 14th week, becoming her second number-one song.

Christian Breslauer directed the visual, which found Lizzo in a sequined jumpsuit dancing hallway with an illuminated dance floor.

Lizzo earned five nods this year: ‘Best R&B/Soul Female Artist,’ ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Best Dance Performance’ and ‘Video of the Year.’

  • Ari Lennox

The burgeoning soul singer often pays homage to the genre. Still, the visual for her September 2010 release, “Pressure,” the lead single from her second studio album Age/Sex/Location,” finds Ari giving legendary singers Diana Ross and Donna Summer their flowers. The project was written and directed by Chandler Lass, with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox on the single’s production.

At this year’s celebration, Ari garnered the second most nods with six nominations: ‘Best R&B/Soul Female Artist,’ ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘The Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s Award,’ ‘Best Dance Performance,’ and ‘Video of the Year.’

  • Diana Ross

On September 25, 1966, as the lead singer of the legendary Motown trio “The Supremes,” Diana Ross and the group gave an unforgettable performance of their hit single, “You Can’t Hurry Love,” during an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The ladies, including Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, looked magical as they shimmered on stage in their silver sequined gowns.

This Ms. Ross is up for the esteemed ‘Certified Soul Award’ alongside fellow influential entertainers, including The Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan, GAP Band’s Charlie Wilson, our Queen of Hip Hop and Soul, Mary J Blige, neo-soul pioneer Maxwell, Ron Isley and the legendary Isley Brothers, hook connoisseur T-Pain, and r&b’s and Soul’s rising musician PJ Morton.

The Soul Train Awards 2022 premieres Saturday, November 26 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET and BET Her.
