When Producers Beef

Beatmakers clash just as much as their MC counterparts.

When Producers Beef - Just because producers don't normally take to the mic doesn't mean they can't clash just as much as their rapping counterparts. Earlier this week, Bangladesh made headlines when he dissed fellow beatmaker Swizz Beatz. “I don’t think Swizz is relevant,” Bangladesh told XXL. “I’m keeping it 100...I think there’s a difference between relevance and musical relevance. You married a lady that’s poppin’ [Alicia Keys], you know it’ll give you a lot of relevance, but you gotta make hits. Ain’t no hits." Sound like fighting words to us. But Bangladesh is just the latest producer to verbally beat on competitors like drum pads on an MPC. Bangladesh vs. Da Internz - Bangaldesh's Swizz diss isn't the first time he's ruffled feathers by calling out his beatmaking brethren. Bang accused production duo Da Internz of copycatting his style in an interview last month, mentioning two songs they produced but not their name. "I wouldn't even say they name. I don't think people know they name. I don't wanna like, put 'em on blast. ...[Rihanna's] 'Birthday Cake' is definitely my style...Big Sean's ['Dance (A$)'], same producers. I think we're getting somewhere with this," said Bangladesh. "They stealing my swag. I'm dripping it everywhere. They pick it up after I do it." Jermaine Dupri vs. Dr. Dre and Timbaland - J.D. landed in hot water when he made the following boast in a 2001 issue of XXL. "Hands down, ain't nobody in the industry that can do what I do," Dupri said. "Not Dre, not Timbaland, not nobody." Dre didn't take the slight lightly, responding with several hilarious shots on an Eminem B-side, "What You Say." "When I see you I'ma step on you/And not even know it, you midget," Dre raps. "Over 80 million records sold/And I ain't have to do it with 10- or 11-year-olds." Pete Rock vs. B-Sides & DJ Simonsayz - Pete Rock's famously beefed with Lupe Fiasco over the latter's repurposing of P.R.'s classic "They Reminisce Over You" beat for "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)." But the producers of the Lupe track, B-Sides and DJ Simonsayz, took some punches as well. "Dat s--t is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f--kin self," Pete wrote via Twitter. Geoff Barrow (Portishead) vs. Diplo - Diplo makes beats (Usher's "Climax," Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now"), and this year, his first book, 128 Beats per Minute. DJ Quik vs. Dr. Dre - DJ Quik once had major issues with fellow iconic Compton rapper-producer Dr. Dre. Quick revealed in an interview last year that his 2000 song "U Ain't Fresh" was a Dre diss, fueled by a perceived slight on the Eminem record "What's the Difference?" Xzibit reportedly squashed the spat before it could really take off.   (Photos from left: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images, John Sciulli/Getty Images for Clear Channel)

Jeff Bhasker vs. Jim Jonsin and Rico Love - Frequent Beyoncé collaborator Jeff Bhasker had some not-so-nice words for hitmakers Rico Love and Jim Jonsin, the creators of Ms. Knowles' friend Kelly Rowland's biggest solo song to date, "Motivation." "How can this [Kelly Rowland] song with the weakest beat and melody of all time be the #1 song on urban!?" Bhasker tweeted. He dissed the song again later that day: "I just listened to Motivation again to see if I was to harsh in my critique. I wasn't. The lyrics are horrid as well." Kanye West vs. Young Chop - Things Young Chop don't like? Kanye's remix of his beat for Chief Keef's hit "I Don't Like," which he says went down without his input. "I just felt disrespected ’cause I didn’t even hear the song before it dropped, and I kept telling them that I wanna hear the song,” he said. “I ain’t know the song was changed over like that."
