Straight Outta Compton - Compton, aka Hub City, forever became entrenched in hip hop culture when NWA stomped straight out of it in 1988 and made the world respect the West Coast and gangsta rap. With the CPT's native sons gearing to release their biopic nationwide on Friday, let's take a look at anthems and tributes recorded by some of Compton's finest, showing love for their 'hood and origins of reality rap. —Michael Harris (@IceBlueVA)(Photos from left: Tim P. DJ Quik – 'Born and Raised in Compton' (1991) - DJ Quik let everyone know where he was from when he dropped his first single from his 1990 debut, Quik Is the Name. Holding down his blocks, he flexed:"Sometimes I have to wear a bulletproof vest/ Because I got the 'CPT' sign written across my chest/ A funky dope brother never ceases to impress/ My name is DJ Quik, so you can f**k the rest."(Photo: Koi Sojer, PacificCoastNews.com)
Game featuring Will.I.Am – 'Compton' (2006) - Game name checked his city with an assist from will.I.am back in 2006. Proclaiming his reign as the King of the West Coast after dropping Doctor's Advocate, he waved the flag high with, "Walking through Compton, Eazy still alive/ Raider hat to the back throw your dubs in the sky/ My flowetry wicked, sit back while I kick it/ And do it like Dre did it, NWA did it.""(Photos from left: Noam Galai/Getty Images for Global Citizen, DVSIL / iPhotoLive.com/WENN.com)N.W.A - “Straight Outta Compton,” Straight Outta Compton (1988) - The title track to the group’s debut album doubly served as an introduction of N.W.A to the world. It also set the tone for a group that would get the conversation started on music censorship in the U.S. a couple of years later. The title alone has proven to live on by itself, as it became the title to one of the biggest films of 2015 based on the group’s ascent to super stardom.(Photo: Ruthless/Priority Records)
