Rihanna - Just when we start to think the shaved sides hairstyle ship has finally sailed (without Cassie, who will apparently never let it go) someone resurrects it again. On April 2 Rihanna showed off long, jet black hair while promoting her upcoming film, Battleship, in Tokyo and kept it from being tame by shaving off a side. (Photo: REUTERS /YURIKO NAKAO /LANDOV)

Pepa, circa 1989 - Much has been said lately about who “started” the half hair trend, but well before it got a huge revival in 2010, Salt ‘N Pepa were credited for popularizing the hairstyle in the ‘80s. Pepa (pictured) revealed on Chris Rock’s 2009 documentary Good Hair that the style was an accident: the signature asymmetrical hairstyle came after a relaxer burned off the hair from one side of her head. Estelle, 2005 - The hairstyle has seen a surge in the past few years but in 2009 Estelle pointed out to WWD, “Everyone and their auntie is…doing half a head shaved. I had that hairstyle in 2005 when [Rihanna] was chilling in Barbados.” We’re not sure why everyone wants to claim to be the first to do this hairstyle! But in the same interview Estelle did note that Pepa was a style influence. (Photo: Jo Hale/Getty Images)

Kelis, 2006 - In 2009, Kelis told Honey magazine it was she who started the hair trend. ”Well, I was definitely the first to do it. The only other person I would give credit before me is Pepa. Other than that, I expect them to copy me. What else are they supposed to do? They’re young. God bless them.” The verdict’s out, but the singer did look extra Bossy in 2006 when she swapped out big curly hair for the edgy style. (Photo: Evens Lamour /Landov)

Cassie, 2009 - Although several stars sported the hairstyle before Cassie, the Bad Boy singer seemed to kick off a revival of the trend in April 2009. When she first debuted the hairstyle, she wrote: “Sometimes in life, you need a change … Something deeper than what you thought you were capable of … Something that displays the ‘I don’t give a f—’ attitude that was always present, but never showcased … & something that will shock your mother, but make her call you a ROCK STAR.” She hasn’t grown it out since!
