Season 1: - Melanie and Derwin have just moved to San Diego together after Derwin signed his rookie contract with the San Diego Sabers. Melanie has made the decision to forgo a med-school education at Johns Hopkins to be with Derwin in Cali. She studies at USC instead.

“The Trey Wiggs Episode” - Melanie has lunch with Derwin’s former-college-teammate-turned-rival Trey Wiggs. Even though she insists it’s strictly platonic, she’s photographed having a second outing with the football player. She and Derwin get in their first argument.

They become friends, and Sidora asks him to be the lead in her music video. The two share a steamy on-screen kiss; that was our first sign that Drew would be trouble. After the breakup, Melanie concentrates on her work in the hospital, but on the advice from a patient about how short life is, decides to make up with Derwin.

Later, Derwin asks for Melanie’s parents’ blessing, but her mother Grace absolutely doesn’t approve. Adding to the humiliation, Grace smacks Derwin repeatedly while her son tapes it. “I Want It All, And I Want It Now” - Janay mistakenly thinks that she is going into labor. After the false alarm, Melanie decides that marrying Derwin before the baby arrives is the best bet, even though it means sacrificing an extravagant wedding. Just when they’re about to exchange “I do’s,” Janay really goes into labor. They rush to the hospital, Baby DJ is born, and Melanie understands that marrying Derwin means loving him through all the madness. Season 4: - Season 4 opens two years later. Derwin and Melanie Davis are the hot married “it” couple, and Derwin is the San Diego Sabers’ franchise player. Although Melanie graduated from med school, she decided not to enter her residency. “Parachutes…Beach Chairs” - Everything is going fine in Melanie and Derwin’s relationship until Tasha fosters seeds of doubt in Melanie’s mind about Baby DJ’s paternity, prompting her to give him a DNA test. She learns that Baby DJ isn’t really Derwin’s son and reluctantly informs Derwin of such. They argue about her sneaky act, but later reconcile.
