Legendary star Nichelle Nichols has died. The trailblazing actress, best known for her portrayal as Lt. Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series from 1966 to 1969, passed away on Saturday (July 30). She was 89 years old.
The Hollywood veteran’s son, Kyle Johnson, announced the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post the next day, revealing that his mother had “succumbed to natural causes and passed away.” He added, “Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”Before fans fell in love with the space authority’s breakout role, Nichols performed in musicals and theater plays.
Tributes have already begun to pour in, and as we continue to mourn the loss of Nichols, we’re looking back on her life’s work with this photo gallery. Take a look below.
