Angela Bassett - Though she was by far the first actress considered for the role, in retrospect it's hard to imagine anyone else but Bassett playing Tina Turner. Already a well-known actress when she starred the film, Bassett's career exploded after her Oscar nomination for playing Turner. She went on to star in dozens of memorable films, including How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale, and received an Emmy nod for playing Coretta Scott King in Betty and Coretta. Most recently, she made her directorial debut in the 2015 Lifetime biopic Whitney, based on the love story between the late Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, and has starred in both American Horror Story: Freak Show and Hotel. Laurence Fishburne - It's said that Fishburne turned down the role of Ike Turner several times until producers told him Bassett was attached to play Tina. He has since had an illustrious career in film, television and on stage, but will probably be best known for his role as Morpheus in the Matrix trilogy. The actor starred in the highly anticipated Superman reboot Man of Steel and, most recently, plays Pops in the ABC series Black-ish. Vanessa Bell Calloway - To play Tina's constant companion Jackie in the film, Calloway had to step far out of her comfort zone. The actress appeared in films like Love Don't Cost a Thing, Biker Boyz and a number of TV series. She co-starred with Jada Pinkett Smith in the now canceled HawthoRNe and opposite Charles S. Dutton and Katt Williams in The Obama Effect. Most recently, she has popped up in several television series, including Reckless, NCIS, Castle and Rizzoli & Isles.
