Terry Crews - BET.com: What are you hoping to get for Father’s Day this year?

Terry Crews: Basically, I just want a little time. On Mother’s Day, it’s the exact opposite. Mother’s want everyone around them. Fathers want to be left alone. I want to read a whole paper, go to the movie I want to see and eat what I want to eat. I might grill and sit in the backyard. That’s my Father’s Day. My wife knows that. She tells the kids to leave me alone.

Terry Crews - BET.com: You’re a new grandfather. How is that? How is it different from participating in your own kid’s development?

Terry Crews: It’s been wonderful. You get all of the pleasure and none of the pain. You get to hold them and squeeze them and make them laugh, and you send them home when they poop. With my own kids I’m stuck.

Terry Crews - There’s also a realization that I have to make money for the next generation. LOL. It hits you. You really want the rest of your family to be OK. When you start seeing the next generations and realizing the impact that every decision has, it’s very deep. You see how every move you make effects everything down the line.

Terry Crews - BET.com: What’s the most challenging thing about fatherhood?

Terry Crews: The most challenging thing about fatherhood is learning how to say you’re sorry. Most of the time, to be a good father, you have to say you’re sorry all the time ‘cause you’re going to mess up. It’s not just saying you’re sorry, it’s how you say you’re sorry.

Terry Crews - You have to really look them kids in the eyes and say ‘I’m sorry.’ It’s always about learning how to apologize the right way. Guys are going to mess it up. We say the wrong thing. We do the wrong thing. We don’t intend to, and it’s one of those things where I know mommy always gets it right.

Terry Crews - I’ll never forget. I remember suggesting that my 19-year-old should get a weave. That was not the right thing to say. LOL. OMG. You would have thought a bomb went off. I said ‘women get weaves all the time. Weaves are acceptable.’ You’d have thought the world ended. I felt so bad. I just didn’t know. The rules change.

Terry Crews - BET.com: What advice would you give to young fathers?

Terry Crews: My advice is to be very, very honest and open and humble. Show humility. The reason I’ve been able to go this long is because I know I don’t have all the answers. I really don’t. A humble attitude will help you stay open to your family and those people you love.

Terry Crews - BET.com: You sometimes spend weeks away from home for your career. What advice would you give to fathers who don’t live with their children?

Terry Crews: You gotta use technology. My thing is it’s almost not the time; it’s the effort that works too. Your kids need to know that you are trying. What happens is most people give up. If they think you’re not trying, that’s almost worse than not being there. The effort allows them to quickly bring you back in.

Terry Crews - The effort is paramount ‘cause you can use technology. They got Skype and video phones and cell phones … everything you can do. If you gotta write a letter, write it. Letters are great ‘cause you have proof. You don’t want them to feel abandoned.
