Handing out leaflets in N.C. can get you in trouble.

In Case You Missed It - Republicans leave President Obama scratching his head; Ben Carson kind of blames the spread of measles on immigrants; one lawmaker thinks it's OK if your food service worker doesn't wash his hands after a bathroom break — and more. — Joyce Jones (@BETpolitichick)

Are You Registered to Vote? - Labor Day may be a national holiday but North Carolina's Moral Monday protesters were hard at work on Sept. 1. LGBT activist and former state senate candidate Ty Turner was cuffed and arrested for handing out voting rights leaflets that day, ThinkProgress reports. They didn't take him directly to jail, however, even though the Mecklenburg County jail was just a few blocks away. "Take this incident and turn it into power. Anyone who says they’re upset about this profiling of Black men, ask them if they’re registered to vote,” Rev. William Barber told a crowd awaiting Turner's release. "That’s how we change this system." (Photo: Casey Throneburg via Youtube)

Justice Will Be Served - Following the beheading of a second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, by Islamist terrorists, Obama vowed that the brutal murder would only "stiffen" America's determination to fight ISIL. “Whatever these murderers think they’ll achieve by killing innocent Americans like Steven, they have already failed. They failed because, like people around the world, Americans are repulsed by their barbarism. We will not be intimidated,” the president said. “Their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to fight against these terrorists. And those who make the mistake of harming Americans will learn that we will not forget and that our reach is long and that justice will be served.” (Photo: AP Photo)

Worse Than ISIL? - Jesse T. Smith, an Alabama candidate for Congress, clearly has no plans to work with the GOP if elected. In a recent tweet, he compared congressional Republicans to the Islamist terrorist group known as ISIS or ISIL. Their actions, Smith wrote, "are worse than ISIL." (Photo: J. If the state loses, it could be required to get federal approval before making future changes to its voting procedures. (Photo: Eric Gay, File/AP Photo)
